Is It Legal for Advocates to Take up Full-Time Jobs While Practicing Law?

No, it is illegal for Indian advocates to work full-time, salaried jobs while they are practicing law.

According to Rule 49 of the Bar Council of India Rules, which were created in accordance with Section 49(1)(c) of the Advocates Act, 1961, advocates who want to continue practicing must not work full-time.

Citing conflict of interest and ethical considerations, the Supreme Court upheld this provision in Satish Kumar Sharma v. Bar Council of H.P.

The Allahabad High Court ruled in Mohd. Kamran v. State of U.P., practicing attorneys are not permitted to work as journalists full-time in addition to practicing law.
