Is it legal to carry weapons like a baton or knife?

Carrying weapons like batons or knives in public usually requires a valid licence under the Arms Act, 1959.

Section 3 prohibits possession of notified arms without authorization, while Section 7 covers “prohibited arms.” Knives with blades over nine inches or wider than two inches, switchblades, daggers, and similar edged weapons are regulated.

Exemptions exist for religious or customary use, like kirpans for Sikhs. Unlicensed possession attracts heavy penalties, including 5–10 years’ imprisonment and fines.

Even with a licence, conditions on use, transport, and purpose must be followed strictly.
