Is it Legal to Feed Stray Dogs in Public Places?

Yes, it is legal to feed stray dogs in public places in India. There are no laws that prohibit this act. The Supreme Court and various High Courts have affirmed this right.

In Swati Chatterjee v. Nagpur Municipal Corporation & Ors, the apex court stayed a Bombay HC order banning public feeding of stray dogs, recognising it as a constitutional right under Article 51A(g).

Similarly, in Dr Maya D. Chablani v. Radha Mittal and Urvashi Vashist v. Residents Welfare Association, the Delhi HC held that feeding strays is lawful but should be done at designated spots in coordination with RWAs and local authorities. Harassing feeders is itself a crime.
