Supreme Court Seeks Rajasthan Government’s Reply in Jaipur Royal Family’s Town Hall Claim

The Supreme Court has asked the Rajasthan government to respond to a plea by the Jaipur royal family seeking the return of the historic Town Hall in Jaipur.

The royal family claims the property was temporarily given to the State for official use after Rajasthan’s formation in 1949 and has remained unused.

Senior advocate Harish Salve, appearing for the family, argued that the matter involves key constitutional questions, including the rights of former royals post the 1971 abolition of privy purses.

He also contended that the dispute is a private property matter and should not be barred by Article 363, which excludes judicial review of pre-Constitutional agreements. The case will be heard after eight weeks.
