Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) has amended its PhD admission policy, making the 50% reservation for Muslim students optional instead of mandatory.
A notification on November 12, 2024, modified Ordinance 9 (IX), replacing “shall” with “may,” allowing departments to decide on implementing the quota.
The All India Students’ Association (AISA) strongly opposed the change, calling it a “deliberate attack” on Muslim students’ rights. They argue that JMI, as a minority institution, must uphold the reservation.
Students are demanding the amendment’s rollback, citing vacant PhD seats despite eligible Muslim applicants.
