Justice B.R. Gavai Recommended as 52nd Chief Justice of India

Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna has recommended Justice B R Gavai as his successor, paving the way for him to become the 52nd Chief Justice of India.

Justice Gavai is scheduled to take oath on May 14, 2025, following CJI Khanna's retirement on May 13.

Born on November 24, 1960, in Amravati, Maharashtra, he began his legal career in 1985, became a Bombay High Court judge in 2003, and was elevated to the Supreme Court in 2019.

He was part of the Constitution Bench that upheld the abrogation of Article 370, which granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir. 

He will serve as CJI until his retirement on November 23, 2025.
