Justice BR Gavai has taken oath as the 52nd Chief Justice of India on May 14, succeeding Justice Sanjiv Khanna. He has become the first Buddhist and the second Dalit to hold the post.
During his six-month tenure, he aims to tackle case pendency by reforming the case listing system. He also seeks to restore public trust in the judiciary, especially after the controversy involving Justice Yashwant Varma.
He intends to maintain transparency in judicial appointments and continue the use of AI in the judiciary, a move initiated by former CJI DY Chandrachud.
Also, the ceremonial bench will mark Justice Bela Trivedi’s last working day on May 16.
