Justice Surya Kant Appointed as Executive Chairman of NALSA

The President of India has nominated Justice Surya Kant as the Executive Chairman of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA), following the convention of appointing the second senior-most judge of the Supreme Court to the post.

He succeeds Justice B.R. Gavai, who is set to become the 52nd Chief Justice of India on the same day.

Justice Kant will head NALSA in its mission to provide free and accessible legal aid to citizens, thereby reinforcing the constitutional vision under Article 39-A.

The appointment has been made under clause (b) of sub-section (2) of Section 3 of the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987. The appointment will take effect from May 14, 2025.
