The Supreme Court refused to examine the legality of QR code mandates issued by Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand during the Kanwar Yatra to display QR codes revealing owners’ identities, noting the pilgrimage ends today.
A bench of Justices MM Sundresh and NK Singh disposed of pleas challenging the directives, but clarified that food vendors must display licences and registration certificates as per law.
Petitioners, including Prof. Apoorvanand and Aakar Patel, argued the QR code system enabled religious profiling. Senior Advocate Singhvi called it “a divisive initiative.”
The Court declined to comment further and closed the applications, leaving broader constitutional questions unanswered.
