PPL Moves Bombay HC Alleging Copyright Infringement In Netflix’s The Great Indian Kapil Show

Phonographic Performance Limited (PPL) has approached the Bombay High Court alleging unauthorised use of its sound recordings in the Netflix show The Great Indian Kapil Show.

PPL claimed that the show’s producers routinely played sound recordings licensed to it as background music during live recordings without obtaining the required licence. It sought directions restraining public performance or communication of recordings assigned or exclusively licensed to PPL, including during live shoots.

The plea also requested appointment of the Court Receiver to seize devices allegedly used to store or play the disputed recordings, with police assistance.

The High Court granted the defendants two weeks to file their reply.
