The Karnataka High Court has reaffirmed the right to health and medical care as a fundamental right, imposing a constitutional obligation on the state to ensure adequate medical facilities.
A division bench directed the Health Department to form a three-member committee to oversee medical infrastructure improvements across urban and rural areas.
The committee must address staff shortages, upgrade facilities, and conduct surveys every six months.
The court issued the direction while disposing of a suo motu PIL initiated, taking cognisance of new reports highlighting a deficit of over 16,500 medical personnel and 454 Primary Health Centres, the court emphasised the effective implementation of health schemes and timely recruitment.
