The Karnataka High Court has directed the state government to create clear rules about who can get remission under Section 166(i)(e) of the Karnataka Prison Manual, which relates to good behaviour, discipline, and taking part in activities in prison.
Justice S. Sunil Dutt Yadav passed the order while allowing a plea by prisoner Arun Kumar Alva, whose remission was denied due to being medically unfit for work.
Justice S. Sunil Dutt Yadav ordered the government to either amend the Manual or issue a circular explaining how non-working prisoners may still qualify for remission for their conduct.
The court also mandated the High Court Legal Services Committee to ensure wrongly denied remission claims are re‑examined.
