Karnataka HC directs strict enforcement of ban on PoP idols painted with hazardous chemicals

The Karnataka High Court directed the strict implementation of the Government Order dated September 10, 2023, prohibiting the manufacture, sale, and immersion of plaster of Paris (PoP) idols painted with hazardous chemicals.

A Division Bench of Chief Justice Vibhu Bakhru and Justice C.M. Joshi emphasised that the State must enforce the order fully to protect water bodies from toxic pollution.

The Karnataka State Pollution Control Board had highlighted violations despite earlier directions under the Water Act, 1974.

The Court noted that FIRs were filed against violators and disposed of the petition, holding that effective implementation of the existing order was sufficient.
