Karnataka High Court Hears NLSIU Reservation Case for Transgender Students

On July 24, 2025, the Karnataka High Court was informed that NLSIU admitted one transgender student in the regular intake this year. 

The University challenged a single judge's order mandating 0.5% reservation for transgender persons in admissions, arguing that the Supreme Court's NALSA directions apply to the State and Centre, and a proper study for quota creation is pending. 

The court questioned the University's objections and highlighted the urgency due to ongoing classes. 

NLSIU claimed the student did not participate in the previous admission cycle and that the writ had become infructuous. The matter will continue hearing on July 28, focusing on implementing interim reservation with fee waiver as directed by the single judge.
