Karnataka High Court Stays State Order Capping Movie Ticket Prices at ₹200

Karnataka High Court Stays State Order Capping Movie Ticket Prices at ₹200

The Karnataka High Court has stayed the State government's recent order that capped the maximum price of movie tickets at Rs. 200 under the Karnataka Cinemas (Regulation) (Amendment) Rules, 2025.

The stay came in light of a plea filed by film producers, the Multiplex Association of India (MAI) and a PVR INOX shareholder challenging the rules. They contended that multiplexes bear more costs than single-screen film theatres and that OTT platforms and satellite TV remain unregulated.

They further contended that the cap violates theatre owners’ fundamental right to carry on business under Article 19(1)(g) of the Constitution.
