Don’t Present Hearsay as Fact, Suggests Apology in Ravi Hegde Defamation Case: Karnataka High Court

The Karnataka High Court, while hearing Editor-in-Chief of Kannada Prabha Ravi Hegde’s plea to quash a defamation case filed by Minister K J George, orally remarked that the media must act responsibly and not destroy lives for TRP ratings.

The case stems from 2020 allegations made by Karnataka Rashtra Samithi leaders, which Hegde reported based on a press release.

The Court said hearsay statements should not be presented as facts and suggested that an apology with equal publicity could lead to quashing.

Interim stay on proceedings was extended till August 20.
