The Karnataka Health Department has implemented the Supreme Court’s order granting terminally ill patients the right to passive euthanasia, allowing them to die with dignity.
The policy applies to patients with incurable illnesses or no chance of recovery while on life support. A two-step medical review process involving a primary and secondary medical board of doctors will decide each case.
A family request is required to initiate the process, which involves reviewing the patient’s condition before life support is withdrawn, under medical supervision, if approved by the Supreme Court.
The new rules also introduce an Advance Medical Directive, allowing patients to record future medical treatment wishes.
