The Kerala High Court dismissed a PIL challenging the State’s AI-driven ‘Safe Kerala Project,’ which deploys automated cameras for traffic enforcement.
Petitioners, including Opposition leader V.D. Satheesan and MLA Ramesh Chennithala, argued that outsourcing operations to private contractors risked misuse of citizens’ driving data.
Rejecting this claim, the Court held that all images of violations are encrypted, stored in State-controlled servers, and verified through applications maintained by the National Informatics Centre.
Noting that private contractors are limited to installation and operational support, the Court ruled there is no data breach and refused to order a probe.
