Kerala High Court Grants Leave to Life Convict Pursuing LLB Course to Attend Internship

The Kerala High Court has allowed a life convict, currently pursuing a 3-year LL.B degree, a 10-day leave to complete his internship. The man was convicted of murder and is serving a life sentence.

Relying on Pattakka Suresh Babu v State of Kerala, which recognises the right of convicts to continue their education, either online or through temporary leave, the Court said access to education must be facilitated even during incarceration.

The court directed the Jail Superintendent to release the convict on a bond of ₹1 lakh with two solvent sureties, subject to the satisfaction of the prison authorities.
