The Kerala High Court has stayed the Lakshadweep administration’s May 14 order to remove Arabic and Mahal (a local Minicoy dialect) from the school curriculum.
The interim relief came on a PIL filed by NSUI Lakshadweep president Ajas Akber, just before schools reopened on June 9.
The bench, led by Chief Justice Nitin Jamdar and Justice Basant Balaji, noted the language’s deep cultural importance and deferred the policy until a full hearing.
The central government clarified that the syllabus change was to take effect from July 1, not June. The matter is listed for hearing on June 9. (Ajas Akber PI v. Union Territory of Lakshadweep)
