The Kerala High Court has lifted the ban on the traditional Pappanji burning at Veli Ground on New Year's Eve. This event, which involves burning a large effigy to symbolize the old year, is an important cultural tradition in Kerala.
The court mandated strict safety measures, including a 70-foot safety barricade around the effigy to ensure public safety. This decision follows a petition from Gala De Fort Kochi challenging a police notice prohibiting the event amid safety concerns.
The court acknowledged the tradition's cultural significance while stressing the need for enhanced security, including surveillance cameras and trained personnel.
