The Kerala High Court proposed banning single-use plastics in hill stations under the Plastic Waste Management Rules, 2016, to prevent environmental damage and prevent places from becoming plastic dump yards amid frequent tourist visits
The Court directed the government to submit a strategy within four weeks, inspired by similar measures in Tamil Nadu.
It also invoked Section 58 of the Kerala Municipalities Act and Section 189 of the Kerala Panchayat Raj Act, 1994, ordering local bodies to clear waste from public areas, including Vallarpadam Container Road.
Specific instructions were given to municipalities, including Kalamassery, to act immediately. The next hearing is scheduled for January 24, 2025.
