Kerala High Court Grants Escort Parole to Death Row Convict on Humanitarian Grounds

The Kerala High Court granted escort parole to a death row convict to visit his 93-year-old bedridden mother, invoking its extraordinary powers under Article 226 of the Constitution.

The convict, one of 14 sentenced for the murder of BJP leader Ranjith Sreenivasan, was denied parole by prison authorities, citing Section 42 of the Kerala Prisons Act and Rule 339(2) of the Rules.

The Court held that constitutional rights and human dignity must be preserved, even for condemned prisoners. The court ordered police- escorted parole for at least six hours, emphasizing that Indian justice upholds compassion over retribution.
