Kerala High Court Imposes Strict Ban on Single-Use Plastics in Hilly Regions and Public Events From October 2

The Kerala High Court has banned single-use plastics in all hilly areas of the state, including tourist spots, and prohibited plastic bottles at weddings and official government functions, effective October 2, 2025.

The ban applies to water bottles with a carrying capacity of less than 5 litres and soda bottles that carry less than 2 litres.

Tourists are directed not to carry single-use plastics and encouraged to use reusable bottles. Authorities must enforce checks at entry points, seize banned items, and deny licences or renewals to establishments violating the ban.

The Court directed local self-government, police, tourism, and pollution control authorities to ensure compliance and protect the environment in ecologically sensitive regions.
