The Kerala High Court has directed the State to set up a dedicated Ashtamudi Wetland Management Unit within two months and create a public portal for reporting pollution and violations affecting the Ramsar-designated Ashtamudi lake.
The order came in response to a PIL highlighting ecological damage due to sewage discharge, unauthorised construction, and administrative apathy.
The Bench, led by Chief Justice Nitin Jamdar and Justice Basant Balaji, mandated a multi-stakeholder authority chaired by the Kollam District Collector to develop a science-based management plan and to engage the public through a dedicated website for actionable community participation.
