The Kerala High Court, questioned the CBFC’s informal objection to the name Janaki in the film JSK: Janaki vs State of Kerala, starring Suresh Gopi and depicting a rape survivor fighting for justice.
The bench noted that Janaki, also a name of Goddess Sita, is common and does not breach censorship norms, stressing the CBFC cannot dictate artistic choices under Articles 19(1)(a) & (g).
The court observed that the CBFC failed to show that any specific religious sentiment was harmed, and directed the Deputy Solicitor General to explain the board’s stand. The matter is listed for further hearing on July 2.
