The Kerala High Court questioned a plea seeking to restrain the release and promotion of a Malayalam film stated to be inspired by the Venjaramoodu mass murder case, observing that a film, as a form of creative expression, is unlikely to interfere with a criminal trial.
The case arose from a petition filed by the father of the sole accused, who claimed that the movie could prejudice his son’s right to a fair trial.
The Court said that social media content cannot be relied upon to establish a connection between the film and the incident, and directed that responses be called for from the film’s director, producer and the Central Board for Film Certification.
