The Kerala High Court has directed the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) to respond to a petition raising concerns about microplastic contamination in drinking water.
A division bench of Chief Justice Nitin Jamadar and Justice V. M. Syam Kumar disposed of the PIL filed by activist C. R. Neelakandan, noting the serious public health implications of plastic particle pollution in water sources.
The petitioner had urged mandatory labelling of bottled water if microplastics were present, under Section 23 and 92(2)(k) of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. The Court said FSSAI must examine the representation without delay.
