Kerala High Court Suggests IRCTC Be Made Liable For Train Waste Management

  • Case Name: Suo Motu v. State of Kerala

The Kerala High Court has orally suggested that IRCTC be made accountable for managing waste generated in trains and railway stations.

A special bench, monitoring waste management following the 2023 Brahmapuram fire, raised concerns over disposal practices at intermediate stations between Thiruvananthapuram and Kasaragod.

The Court questioned how waste is treated after being handed to local authorities and highlighted the growing issue of plastic waste, especially in trains like Vande Bharat.

IRCTC profits from catering and stall operations, the Court said it should also share responsibility for waste management. The matter will be heard on August 8.
