Kerala HC Urges IRCTC to Mandate Biodegradable Packaging on Trains Following Brahmapuram Fire

The Kerala High Court, in suo motu proceedings over the Brahmapuram fire, urged IRCTC on August 9, 2025, to require biodegradable packaging from food manufacturers on Vande Bharat and other trains.

The Special Bench of Justices Bechu Kurian Thomas and Gopinath P. highlighted IRCTC’s role as a bulk purchaser in reducing plastic waste by mandating eco-friendly packaging.

The Court also warned rail authorities that outsourcing waste collection doesn’t exempt them from ensuring proper scientific disposal.

Further directions are expected to oversee and inspect waste management protocols closely.
