The Delhi High Court directed that all law colleges across India must follow uniform attendance norms as prescribed by the Bar Council of India (BCI) and prohibited institutions from imposing stricter requirements than those set by the BCI.
The Court noted that arbitrary enforcement of attendance policies has led to severe stress and even student suicides, defeating the objectives of legal education and the National Education Policy, 2020.
The Court further directed the BCI to frame clear attendance guidelines and mandated grievance redressal mechanisms with counsellors to address students’ mental health concerns.
