Live-In Relationships ‘Harm Women, Clash with Middle‑Class Norms’: Allahabad High Court

The Allahabad High Court, while granting bail to Shane Alam, observed that although the Supreme Court has legalised live‑in relationships, they often conflict with “settled law in Indian middle‑class society” and adversely affect women.

Justice Siddharth noted that post break‑ups, men can easily remarry, but women struggle to find life partners

Alam was booked under the BNS, 2023, and the POCSO Act for allegedly sexually exploiting a woman by falsely promising marriage, and had been in custody since February.

The court granted bail, citing his clean record, completed investigation, and jail overcrowding, while voicing concern over the increasing number of such cases. (Shane Alam v State Of U.P)
