A fourth-semester LLB student from Government Law College, Ernakulam, has moved the Kerala High Court challenging a cap on internships imposed by the college and Mahatma Gandhi University.
The petitioner, Aswin R, argued that limiting students to just two internships under trial or appellate advocates violates Bar Council of India rules and his fundamental rights under Articles 14, 19(1)(g), and 21.
The BCI mandates a minimum of 12 weeks of internships but sets no upper limit. Justice TR Ravi issued notices to the BCI, MG University, and the college, seeking their responses. The matter will be heard further on August 11.
