Justice Rohinton Nariman Urges Nation-Wide Ban on Religious Loudspeakers for Public Health

Former Supreme Court Judge Rohinton Fali Nariman has called for a nation-wide ban on loudspeakers used in religious settings, citing noise pollution as a violation of citizens’ rights to health and peaceful living. 

Speaking at the KM Bashir Memorial Lecture in Thiruvananthapuram, he argued that loudspeakers and persistent bell-ringing disturb sleep and public tranquillity. He said equal application across all faiths would prevent claims of favouritism.

Nariman invoked constitutional principles, particularly Article 25, and insisted that the protection of public health is a legitimate ground for restricting religious sound practice.
