Rape Accused Married Victim in Odisha Ganjam Jail

A 26-year-old undertrial, Surya Kant Behera, currently lodged in the Kodala Sub-Jail, Ganjam district, solemnized his marriage with the complainant inside the prison premises.

The wedding, held with the permission of jail authorities and in compliance with legal formalities, was attended by the families of both parties and local dignitaries.

The couple had a pre-existing relationship, which soured due to family disputes, leading to a rape complaint and Behera's arrest in November 2024. With the families reconciling, the marriage was facilitated following traditional Hindu rituals.

After the ceremony, Behera was returned to custody, while the bride returned home. Authorities expressed hope for the couple’s future upon Behera's anticipated release.
