Lulu Mall Promises Bombay HC It Will Stop Playing Unlicensed Copyrighted Songs

  • Case Name: Phonographic Performance Limited vs Lulu International Shopping Malls
  • Judge(s): Justice Riyaz Chagla
  • Advocate(s): Sharan Jagtiani, Sameer Pandit & others

Lulu International Malls assured the Bombay High Court it would no longer play copyrighted music by PPL without a valid license. This followed a lawsuit filed by PPL for non-payment of license fees since 2022.

The Malls assured the Bombay HC that third-party events will not play copyrighted music without a valid license from Phonographic Performance Limited. Under Section 52 in The Copyright Act of 1957, public events generally require licenses unless exempted, ensuring compliance with copyright laws.

The mall's fee payments to PPL will be subject to the suit's final outcome, reinforcing the need for adherence to copyright laws.
