Madhya Pradesh Court Denies Bail to Paediatrician After Coldrif Cough Syrup Deaths

The Madhya Pradesh (Chhindwara) court rejected bail for Dr Praveen Soni, accused of administering Coldrif cough syrup to children under five, resulting in at least 24 deaths due to kidney failure.

The syrup, manufactured by Srisan Pharmaceuticals in Tamil Nadu, contained the toxic chemical Diethylene Glycol.

Additional Sessions Judge Gautam Kumar Gujre noted that prima facie evidence indicates the accused knowingly prescribed the dangerous medicine despite prior knowledge of its risks and existing health guidelines. The offence is serious, and granting bail could allow the accused to influence witnesses.

The Charges filed include Section 276 IPC and Section 27 of the Drugs & Cosmetics Act, 1940.
