Madras High Court Urges Tamil Nadu Govt to Decide on Horizontal Reservation for Transgender & Intersex Persons

The Madras High Court has directed the Tamil Nadu government to take a definitive decision on granting horizontal reservation to transgender and intersex persons in education and public employment.

Justice N Anand Venkatesh observed that the community should not be forced to approach courts repeatedly.

The Court appreciated the State for introducing the Tamil Nadu State Policy for Transgender Persons, 2025, becoming the 7th state to do so.

It urged inclusive representation in monitoring committees and proper recognition of transgender marriages. The Court also asked the State to expedite a separate policy for LGBQA+ persons currently under consideration.
