The Madras High Court issued notice on a plea challenging the enrolment of AG Perarivalan, one of the convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, as an advocate with the Bar Council of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.
The petition argues that Perarivalan was released by the Supreme Court under Article 142 due to the delay in deciding his mercy plea, but was never acquitted of the offence.
Relying on Section 24A of the Advocates Act, the petitioner contended that persons convicted of offences involving moral turpitude should not be permitted to practise law.
The matter has been adjourned for further hearing after the court vacation.
