Madras HC restrains Shaadi.com’s ad over "30-Day Money Back Guarantee" Misleading Claims

Madras HC restrains Shaadi.com’s ad over "30-Day Money Back Guarantee" Misleading Claims

  • Case Name: Matrimony.com Ltd v. People Interactive (I) Pvt Ltd

The Madras High Court decided that the advertisement for Shaadi.com’s "30-Day Money Back Guarantee" if unable to find a bride/groom in 30 days is prima facie misleading and deceptive.

The Court pointed out that the real terms of the offer, which is contrary to the promise made in the ad, are "tucked in fine print", leading to false claims about guaranteed matches.

The court supported a complaint from Matrimony.com, saying that Shaadi.com was involved in unfair trade practices and violated the Code for Self-regulation of Advertising Content in India, Cable Television Networks Act and Rules.

Even after a warning from the Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI), the platform kept showing the ad.

The court then placed a temporary ban on Shaadi.com from airing the misleading advertisement in any medium.
