Madras High Court Directs Judge to Watch Movie ‘Manushi’ Before Deciding on Censorship Dispute

The Madras High Court has directed a single judge to personally watch the Tamil film Manushi before deciding on a petition challenging the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC)’s refusal to certify the movie.

The producers alleged an arbitrary rejection by the CBFC, claiming the film did not violate guidelines.

An acclaimed director, Vetri Maaran, approached the Court to quash the recommendations made by the Revising Committee, suggesting around 37 excisions/modifications in the movie.

The Court emphasised the need for a firsthand assessment of the film’s content to evaluate its compliance with certification norms, rather than relying solely on affidavits.
