The Madras High Court, hearing a petition filed by Nigerian national Egwim Kingstley, directed prison authorities to investigate claims of ill-treatment at Puzhal Central Prison, Chennai.
Kingstley, arrested for alleged drug smuggling in 2021, alleged that inmates were denied meals, placed in solitary confinement, and deprived of medical and telephone facilities.
The Bench emphasised that all prisoners, regardless of nationality, must be treated per the prison manual and international treaties.
The Court also instructed the prison superintendent to address the allegations and ensure fair treatment for foreign inmates.
