Madras High Court Directs TN Home Secretary to Ensure Timely Filing of FIRs and Final Reports

The Madras High Court has directed the Tamil Nadu Home Secretary to ensure that First Information Reports (FIRs) and final reports are filed promptly by the police department as per legal procedures.

The Bench emphasized that not every individual can approach the court for such directions, making it the police department’s duty to act efficiently.

The case involved Sundar, whose 2015 case lacked a final report despite closure.

The court noted systemic delays and warned of arbitrary police actions. Citing procedural lapses, it stressed that all materials collected during investigations must be submitted on time.

The court had directed the Home Secretary to appear before the court.
