Madras HC May Direct Tamil Nadu to Follow SC Guidelines on Street Dog Management

The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court, while hearing petitions on stray cattle, street dogs, and dog menace in a temple, indicated it may direct Tamil Nadu to adopt the Supreme Court’s guidelines for managing street dogs in Delhi.

Petitioners cited alarming figures of 3.67 lakh dog bites and 20 rabies deaths in 2025, urging urgent action.

Animal welfare groups highlighted inadequate infrastructure and stressed adherence to the Animal Birth Control programme, while residents supported stricter measures.

The Court will issue formal orders after reviewing the Supreme Court’s ruling, potentially establishing state-wide street dog management protocols.
