Madras HC Refuses to Close Case Against Ex-Minister Ponmudi Over Alleged Communal Remarks On Hindu Sects

The Madras High Court has refused to close its suo motu case against former Tamil Nadu Forest Minister K Ponmudi for allegedly narrating a lewd joke involving the religious tilaks worn by Shaivites and Vaishnavites.

This decision came despite the State police having closed several complaints related to the incident. The Court criticised the growing trend of politicians, “politicians cannot act like kings,” highlighting the need for accountability in public speech.

He remarked that being in power does not entitle anyone to speak irresponsibly, especially when it offends religious sentiments and disturbs communal harmony in a diverse society. Further hearings are scheduled for August 1.
