The Madras High Court issued notices in a public interest litigation (PIL) seeking mandatory disclosure of tax components in petrol and diesel bills and on display boards at fuel stations to promote consumer transparency.
The petitioner argued that under the Consumer Protection Act, 2019, consumers have a right to know the tax breakup, and non-disclosure amounts to an unfair trade practice.
The Court directed the impleadment of Central and State tax authorities, the Union Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, the Tamil Nadu Finance Department, and major fuel companies as respondents.
The case is scheduled for a hearing on November 7.
