Madras High Court Stops Action Against Retailers for Not Using Tamil Shop Names

  • Case Name: Retailers Association of India v. The Department of Labour and Skill Development

The Madras High Court has held that the Greater Chennai Corporation should not take strict action against shop owners who do not display their shop names in Tamil by May 30.

This order comes in response to a petition from the Retailers Association of India, which argued that the May 30 deadline for compliance was impractical due to high costs, vendor delays, and design complexities.

The judges said no coercive steps should be taken until the case is decided.

The retailers argued that the rule affects their business and freedom under Article 19(1)(g). The Court will hear the matter again soon and decide if the rule is valid under the law.
