The Madras High Court recently upheld the State Human Rights Commission’s (SHRC) order directing ₹1 lakh compensation to Rajnikanth, a victim of custodial torture by police officials.
The Court emphasised that police must uphold human rights while maintaining law and order, respecting dignity, and avoiding discrimination. Rajnikanth alleged illegal detention, assault, and humiliation, violating his fundamental rights under the Indian Constitution.
The SHRC found violations of personal liberty and dignity, ordering compensation under Section 18 of the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993.
The court ruled the SHRC’s binding recommendations and the state’s sanction lawful, dismissing police officers’ pleas challenging the order.
