The Madras High Court directed the Tamil Nadu DGP and Chennai Police Commissioner to ensure that no identifying details of victims in sexual offence cases appear in FIRs or any police records.
The ruling came after a rape survivor was named in an FIR. The Court warned of suo motu contempt proceedings against the police department for future violations.
Citing Supreme Court rulings and legal provisions, the Court emphasised that victims’ identities must remain confidential following Section 228A of the IPC and related laws protecting women and children.
Police were also ordered to immediately delete the victim’s name from FIRs, statements, and related documents. (Sakthivel Ganesan v. Inspector of Police)
