Consumer Court Slaps ₹1.2 Lakh Penalty on PVR & INOX for Excessive Pre-Movie Ads

  • Case Name: Abhishek vs PVR and Others

A Bengaluru consumer court fined PVR Cinemas and INOX ₹1.28 lakh for delaying a movie screening by 25 minutes with excessive commercial ads.

A viewer booked a 4:05 PM show of the film “Sam Bahadur”. However, screening did not commence until 4:30 PM.

The complainant filed a complaint under Section 35 of the Consumer Protection Act and argued that this wasted his time and disrupted his schedule.

The court ruled this practice as an unfair trade practice, ordering cinemas to display actual movie start times on tickets and limiting pre-show government PSAs to 10 minutes. BookMyShow was exempted as it doesn't control screenings.
